The Perfect Wine for Your Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving can be stressful.  Family, lots of food, and football can lead to a very long, noisy day.  If you are in charge of the Thanksgiving meal then you might wonder what is the perfect wine for your meal.

While my philosophy has always been to eat what you like and drink what you like, there are some really great pairings for a turkey or ham dinner.  For me, I prefer a rose’ with ham and turkey.  I recently bought this bottle of Domain Lafone Tavel 2013.  Wow!!  When I opened the bottle, I immediately smelled watermelon.  And the color is outstanding.  I paid about $17 for this bottle.  It won’t make it to Thanksgiving dinner.  Because I’ll have it gone before then!!

As a hog farmer, we normally eat ham for Thanksgiving.  So I normally look for a wine that will match a nice ham.  The spice and berry flavors this wine exhibits will be a great match for your ham.  But it is flavorful enough to pair with a citrus-brined turkey as well.

Here is the description from their website.

TAVEL
Grenache 60%, Cinsault 10%, Syrah 10%, Carigna 5% and with Clairette, Picpoul, Bourboulenc, Mourvèdre.
The LAFOND DOMAINE TAVEL is characterized by a lovely pure tender pink colour. The predominating aromas are complex: red and white fruit associated with floral notes. With time, these fruity aromas will evolve toward more mellow notes with a touch of spice and stone fruits, and the colour will take on amber tints. As of its first year, it disposes of all the necessary aromas to be appreciated, but it also has an exceptional ageing potential.

Even if you think you don’t like rose’ or that your guests will think it’s too girly, I encourage you to try a bottle.  Your guests will be pleased!

Wordless Wednesday: What Might Have Been

On what would have been your 41st birthday.  It still doesn’t seem real.  Happy Birthday Dear Jennie.  You were so greatly loved and are so greatly missed.

Spaghetti Pie to Feed a Crew

Every planting and harvest season, I’m responsible for one night of feeding our field help.  That means I cook for 10 guys, 3 kids and my Grandma.  Grandma doesn’t help in the field but I do like to take her a meal so she can take a night off from cooking for herself.  And then my kids get a chance to visit with their Great-Grandma as well!

Start by beating an egg and spreading it in the bottom of a 9×13 casserole dish.

photo 5

Cook some spaghetti.  I usually cook a big box and then make two casseroles.  I think in this picture I ran out of spaghetti.  So I added egg noodles!

photo 4

Brown a pound of hamburger (or 2 if you are doubling the recipe) and add a jar, or two, of spaghetti sauce.

photo 3

Layer the spaghetti, meat sauce and then a package of mozzarella cheese on top.  Bake at 350 for about 25 minutes.  That’s it!!

photo 2

Since harvest usually last 2 months for us, I end up making supper 7-8 times.  This meal is almost always the first meal I make of the season.  It’s cheap, filling and the guys really like it.  Or at least they tell me they do!

What’s your favorite meal to fix for a crowd?  Spaghetti Pie tops my list.  But what about yours?

A Grateful Pumpkin

I’ve always wondered what we should do with our pumpkins once Halloween is over.  We don’t usually carve them.  The kids haven’t been old enough to have free reign with sharp objects yet.  And I never process them to make pumpkin because The Farmer doesn’t like pumpkin and won’t eat desserts made from it.

So normally they just get thrown in the field.  Until this year.

Last year, social media was buzzing with people writing something they are thankful for everyday during November.  We are taking it a different direction.  A bit more private.  I don’t need to tell the whole world that I’m grateful for my family or my job or my farm.  People who know me know I’m thankful.  And I get sick of reading the bragging these posts turn in to.

So my family will keep our thankfulness a bit more private.  And save our Halloween pumpkins to turn them into a Grateful Thanksgiving Pumpkin.

Each day, we will take one of our undecorated, glitter-free pumpkin and write on it.  Each family member will write one thing they are thankful for each day of November.  By the end of the month our pumpkin will be full of our thoughts.  Last year, our pumpkin was a great reflection of what The Farmer and I are trying to instil in our kids.  Values, morals, love.

pumpkin

What are we thankful for?  Plenty.  We will write on the pumpkin until we reach the end of the month.  If the pumpkin fills up, I still have a few more we can write on.  Because we have much to be thankful for.

Wine Review: When I Disagree with the Judges

I like to see results of wine competitions.  It’s interesting to see what medals the judges award to wines.  And as someone who markets a pretty huge, major, really great wine competition, I find a lot of value in getting the wineries to enter their wines so they can win some awards!

But there’s always a moment when I see a wine that I love that didn’t win a medal.  And I start to question my palate.  Did I miss some flaw in the wine?  Did the wine smell funny?  Had it changed since I last drank it?

Such is the case with a wine I truly love.  Oliver Winery is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery.  And, as a disclaimer, I work for Indiana wineries.  I think we have some pretty exceptional wineries and wines all around the state.  But most would say if you know the bare bones about Indiana wine, you likely know about Oliver Winery.  Started in the early 70’s, they have won tons of trophies, medals, and accolades for their wines.  They’re great.  The winemaking team doesn’t make a bad wine.

Except that one of my favorite wines didn’t win a medal in the wine competition I promote.  And I was shocked!!  So I bought a bottle on a recent trip to the winery and tried it again.  And I decided I completely disagree with the judges!  Because this wine is great.

So on to the wine.  It’s called Oliver Winery 2012 Creekbend III.  This is their second vintage and I like it as much as I liked the first vintage.  The wine is dry and is a blend of barrel fermented Vignoles and Vidal Blanc, along with portion of stainless steel fermented Chardonel. The folks at Oliver WInery describe it as “delightful tropical aromas combine with flavors of pear and apple and a hint of vanilla and oak for a delightful, lasting finish.”  I just say it’s great.

And it’s only $22 a bottle.  this is the perfect wine to enjoy after the kids have gone to bed.  Just a glass of this wine and a good book.  Or, if like me, you’re still answering email and finishing the days work.  This wine goes well with work.

While I think medals and trophies are wonderful, just because a wine didn’t win a medal doesn’t mean you’ll think it’s a bad wine.  A set of judges on a particular day didn’t like it.  But be your own judge.  Because you don’t want to miss the chance to try a new favorite wine.

Disclaimer: While I work for Indiana wineries, I was not paid to give this wine my undying love.  I bought this bottle of wine becuase I had already fallen in love with it.  And our wine competition is great, with fantastic judges.  They just overlooked this beauty.

How to Get a Wife – According to a 4 Year Old

If you are a 4 year old boy, girls usually have cooties and are gross.  Unless you are my Little Man.  He thinks girls are awesome.  He has an extreme fondness for one little girl in his daycare.

This little girl stopped by one day.  She has a sister the same as as my Monkey and those two had been having a sleepover.  When they arrived home, the love of my Little Man’s life told him she wanted to see a pig.  He begged The Farmer to get a pig from the barn.

And the pig arrived in the house, much to the delight of the young lady.  And my Little Man decided he would win over the heart of this young lady with his livestock.  Young love…

Chocolate Peanut Butter Overnight Oats

I love breakfast.  Biscuits and sausage gravy, grits, scrambled eggs with bacon and fried mush are a few of my favorites.  But none of those foods are helping shrink my waistline.  And I am making an effort to shrink some parts of me.  So I’ve been on a hunt for some quick and easy breakfast foods that are easy to make and keep  me full for more than a few hours.

The internet is full of overnight oats recipes.  And I’ve been afraid to try them.  I can’t stand instant oatmeal.  It was something I ate all the time as a kid and I can’t even choke down oatmeal now.  So the thought of going back to oatmeal for breakfast was a bit shocking to me!

However, I have found a way to make oatmeal that tastes great!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Overnight Oats.  Yum!!  I can mix these up in 60 seconds.  And while they do taste better if you put them in the fridge for at least an hour, I have eaten them immediately too.  They taste just fine.  And if you sprinkle them with just a bit of chocolate chips, you get a very decadent breakfast treat, for roughly 300 calories!  Enjoy!!

A Missed Preschool Fieldtrip. And Lots of Tears

My Little Man has the best preschool teacher.  I know we all think our kids have the best, but honestly, his teacher is better than your kids teacher.

Why?  Mrs. Walters has taught all three of my kids for preschool.  She is fun, laughs with them, teachers them better than I ever could, Godly, and so many more reasons.  The Little Man thinks she is beautiful, so that is a big plus in his learning ability as well.

All of that to say, I’ve never had to worry about my kids when they are in her class.  They are fine.  They make friends. And I know they are loved.

Yet this picture hit me hard, right in the gut.

10653738_457774601030705_7336282702897106634_n

It’s of the entire preschool class.  And their Mom’s.  That little face on the back of the hay wagon?  That’s my Little Man.  Without his Mom.  Because Mom has a full-time job and can’t take time off for every field trip.  Or class party.  Or fundraiser handout.  Or PTO meeting.

So when this picture landed on my Facebook feed, I immediately started shedding guilty tears.  Sitting at my desk wanting to run home and scoop him up to remind him that I love him.  And that my absence didn’t mean I loved him any less than all of the other Moms who were there.

Then a friend talked me off my crazy ledge.  The Mom of another little girl in the class, who shares the same PTO nightmares I do, who has kids exactly the same age as mine and who also works full-time, married to a guy who also farms and generally shares my same crazy need to try to do it all.  She pointed out her daughter in the picture, who was sitting on the preschool teachers lap because she couldn’t go on the trip.  And reminded me that it’s ok to be absent sometimes.  That it doesn’t diminish the love we have for our kids.  That by being strong, working women, we are setting an example for our kids.  We still love them.  We just have things we have to do as well.  And bills to pay.  Farms to run and people to serve.

I know my Little Man was fine.  How?  This picture.  He’s happily playing in a bunch of straw during the field trip.  Hanging out with his buddies and having a great time.

10406846_457774514364047_3468261620474105674_n

I’m going to miss a lot of field trips.  I already have with my Panda and Monkey.  I can’t be everywhere.  I am smart enough to know that.  I tried to serve on the PTO and hated every second of it.  I learned you can’t run a PTO meeting like a board meeting and everything seems to happen during the school day.  I’ll happily send money for fundraisers, just don’t ask me to be in charge of them anymore!  I can’t volunteer in the kids classes every week, or month and at some point, my kids will likely forget their lunch and I won’t be around to take it to them.

But what they will know is that their Mom loves them.  I’ll play basketball with them in the barn lot.  I’ll read stories to them until my throat goes dry.  We’ll spend hours riding in the tractors during harvest.  I’ll be at as many sports games as possible and I’ll be the one cheering for their accomplishments and offering a hug for a loss.  I’ll spend hundreds of hours supervising 4H project completion and I won’t complain about it.  I’ll let them sleep in my bed just because they want to talk, well past their bedtime, with subjects ranging from silly to stuff that is pretty important.

That I’ll love them unconditionally.  No strings.  And the greatest gift given to me is to be their Mom.

Fitness Friday: Running in the Leaves

It’s been a month since my last run.  Ashamed to say that.  But time to get honest with myself.

I got out to my trail this week.  And the run was worth it. My trail.  Full of leaves.  I could feel the stress melting off of me and the crunching of the leaves was so therapeutic.

Giveaway: Indianapolis Children’s Museum Haunted House

I don’t like to be scared.  I’m a super-jumpy person.  Ask anyone who walks into my work office without knocking.  I jump out of my skin.  The Farmer thinks it is hilarious to sneak up on me.  I’ll jump a milk.  And the kids constantly are trying scare me.  It’s not hard!

I’ll also admit to not being someone who really enjoys Halloween.  Except for the candy.  I like free candy.  Especially Mounds bars.  Feel free to send those my way.

So when I was offered a chance of a preview tour of the Indianapolis CHildren’s Museum Haunted House, I hesitated.  And I asked them a lot of questions, specifically if anyone was going to jump out at me!

Thankfully, our preview was during their Lights On hours.  And it was neat to see the amount of work that goes into this Haunted House.  This year’s theme is a Creepy Carnival.  As someone who has both an amateur circus and a well-loved county fair in my backyard, this felt a bit like some of my home stomping grounds.

I hate clowns.  I’ve said that many times in this blog.  So the first thing we saw was this…a giant clown’s face.  My Monkey isn’t really thrilled with clowns either, as you can tell by her face!!  Despite my fear of clowns, lights on or off, this was a great feature.  Kids can crawl through the mouth into a different part of the museum.  My Little Man thought that was great!

2014-10-03 11.13.01

The entire Haunted House had really fun spots.  And neat things to look at.  The girls loved the black lights in the rooms!  They glowed in the dark!

2014-10-03 11.23.49

It was a pretty quick visit through the Haunted House.  I was told that the typical visit is about 15 minutes.  Maybe a bit more for the Lights On hours, probably less for the extreme scare hours.  There are also chicken exits, just in case you can’t make it through!

While the Indianapolis Children’s Museum provided me and my kids with free admission to the Haunted House and tickets for a giveaway, my opinions expressed are my own.  I still hate clowns.  No one can change that opinion.
