I Left My Baby Today

My heart was breaking as I left the house this morning. You have to have had kids to understand why I was so sad. Today was the first day I left my Lion Cub at daycare. I started feeling sick last night when I was packing bottles, getting the diapers together and finding some spare outfits.

I really have the best job in the world. I am so grateful to have a fabulous job to return to. But the first day returning is so hard. Thankfully I went to a meeting with a bunch of bloggy friends, many of whom are moms. So no one looked at me funny when I showed up with tear-streaked cheeks and red eyes.

I know it gets easier, but I miss my baby boy!

My Halloween Creative Costume Moment

It’s not often that I get creative. If you read my Halloween craft post, you’ll recall that I made ghost suckers and thought I was the most creative mom on the planet. Then my daughter brought home her Halloween snack bag and there were 5 other ghost suckers. So I’m not as creative as I thought I was!

I let my Panda and Monkey decide what they were going to be for Halloween. We’re not big into the holiday. We don’t decorate and I don’t let them dress is scary costumes. This year they wanted to do a group costume, something that worked for all three of them.

My Panda loves Dr. Seuss! I’ve read Are You My Mother more times that I can count. She reads all of their books numerous times a night. So when we started thinking about what they should dress up as, we came up with The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2!

I did buy my Lion Cub’s outfit.  However, a trip to Goodwill and the fabric store let me quickly make my girls outfits.  Red pants and shirts, a few blue wigs, and two pieces of felt made the outfit complete.  They looked cute and were very excited to share their love of Dr. Seuss!

Halloween Treats for the Chaotic Mom

I want to be the mom who has time to make superhero and fairy costumes out of a yard of fabric and some sparkly paint.  Or the mom who can take a cake mix and make cupcakes that resemble mummies and other creatures.  Instead I’m the mom who assembles treat bags of juice boxes, fruit bars and some other healthy treat that no kid really wants on Halloween.

I’m pressed for time.  I envy my friends who have the time and talent to come up with fabulous treats for the school party.  My Panda is having a Fall Party on Friday and I know those said mom’s will have some super creative treat to pass out that the bunch of 1st graders will ooh and aah over before devouring it and obtaining a sugar high that would make Willy Wonka jealous.

My mom was that mom.  She was a stay-at-home mom and made time to develop the super creative food and craft items for school.  I always had the best costumes for the school play and she always made our Halloween outfits.  And while I possess the talents to cook and sew, what I am lacking is the time.

This year I decided my Panda and Monkey were going to have nice treats for their respective 1st grade and preschool classes.  So I turned to two standbys.

The first are ghost cookies. You need a package of Nutter Butter cookies.

Melt one package of vanilla coating or two bags of white chocolate chips in a bowl in the microwave.

Dunk the Nutter Butter cookies in the the white chocolate, 2 or 3 cookies at a time.  Using a fork, remove from white chocolate, letting excess chocolate drop off the cookie, and place on wax paper lined cookie sheet.

Then take mini chocolate chips and place two on each “ghost” for their eyes.

The results should slightly resemble ghosts!!

My other easy treat for the kids friends are ghost suckers.  Very simply take any type of lollipop, I used Charms, cover each with a tissue and tie a bow with yarn or string.  My girls made these in an assembly line! My Monkey put the tissue on the sucker, Panda tied the bow with string.  Very easy and really cute!

So my kids won’t go to school with fancy cupcakes or elaborate treat bags. I’m fairly proud of what I made and even happier that they were able to help!

My Sanity in a Pair of Shoes

These running shoes represent my sanity.  20 days after having a baby, I laced them up and went for a run. And a piece of my sanity returned, step by step.

I started running in 1996.  I stepped on the scale one morning and was repulsed by the number that stared back at me.  I had been married to my farmer for one year and had put myself last on the to-do list.  I was in school full-time, working full-time and trying to be a wife, all at 21 years old.

I put on a pair of shoes and ran in a straight line from my house until I was exhausted and turned around and walked home.  Each day was a challenge to run a bit further.  As the years passed, I challenged myself to run races, starting with 5K’s and working my way up to marathons.

My first marathon was in Walt Disney World in 1999.  Since that time I have run 4 more marathons, a dozen half-marathons and countless small local races. The medals are all saved and provide a perspective of the miles covered.  I’ve even run a half marathon in Napa, California, where the finish line featured a wine festival. After that race, I firmly believe all races should end with wine! It’s good to have a goal to run for!

So today, when I have been feeling a bit exhausted from seemingly endless feeding sessions of a 3 week old, homework for the 6 year old, the meanderings of the 4 year old, laundry, meals, and trying to keep up with my “real” job while supposedly on maternity leave, I decided I need to run.  With each step of a fairly slow 3 mile run, I felt a bit of myself returning.  Running is my passion.  And while I have the pace of a turtle instead of the hare, it is a time of reflection.  I can’t wait to lace up the shoes again tomorrow.

Time to pick a winner!

My job as Marketing Director of the Indiana Wine Grape Council has me at the fair alot. I have a booth in the Ag/Hort building.  I spend time in meetings and greeting many people as they tell me their favorite wine!
So I think I know the fair inside and out.  I’ve seen it all at some point.  However, Monday was a fun day to experience the fair with fellow bloggers and our kids!  Thanks to the Indiana Soybean Alliance, American Dairy Association of Indiana and Indiana Pork Producers for the tickets and meals they provided for myself and my Panda.  We were exhausted from walking the fair all day, but were well fed along the way!  I’ll have more posts this week on our fun day of activities.

I am happy to announce the winner of the ticket giveaway, using the website RANDOM.org is…(insert drumroll)…Windi!  Please email me at the email on my contact list and I’ll get your tickets to you!

Congratulations and enjoy the fair!

I’m Hopping Along Today!

The View on My Vacation

This was the view I had for much of our recent vacation.
My two daughters and husband, hand-in-hand while I followed along behind them.  In all fairness, I was walking slow because of a 34 week pregnant belly and feet, that at the end of the day, looked like this.
Swollen doesn’t begin to explain how my feet felt.
My family decided to go to Holiday World for a vacation. Located in Santa Claus, Indiana, Holiday World is a great amusement park. And I love roller coasters.  However, I couldn’t ride anything. So I had to follow my family around and wait while they rode the rides.
The first stop on our vacation was to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. My kids loved the Barbie exhibit! They got to dress up and model in fancy clothes.
The Egypt exhibit was very cool, as was the picture I ended up with. They are hanging out on a few sphynx and playing dress up with Mommy.
And then it’s time to pose with Daddy!

Finally we were off to Holiday World to see Santa.

And get wet on a really fun ride!

We stayed at a nearby campgrounds where we rented a camper. One evening the campgrounds featured a golf cart glow parade. Our golf cart was pretty pathetic, but still fun.

However, in the end, we had a great time and can’t wait to go back next year. Next time I won’t be pregnant and will actually go on rides with the kids!

Nearly 3000 Wines to be Judged!!

What might be the best job to have for a few days? How about judging 2600 wines at Purdue University?!

The 2010 Indy International Wine Competition is taking place in the Memorial Union of Purdue University. Over 50 judges from around the world have gathered in West Lafayette to sniff, swish, spit and score their ways to determining a Best of Show!

We divide our judges into panels. The panel above is made up of Jeanne Burgess, VP of Winemaking at Seavin; Dana Huber, Marketing and PR Director at Huber’s Orchard, Winery and Vineyard; Carl Behnke of Purdue University; and Scott Tucker, Co-President of Maple Leaf Farms!

This is just a portion of the wine the judges will go through. Whew!!
